Associate Degree Programs in California
Two-year programs outnumber four-year ones here, 102 to 27, among the criminal justice schools in California that are ranked. Tuition and fees run a median $1,288 a year for a resident, $3,565 below the $4,853 median for ranked associate’s programs nationally. De Anza College leads the list, and it conferred 39 criminal justice degrees in 2023-24. Completion runs lower at two-year schools because many students transfer or study part time, so associate’s programs are scored only against other associate’s programs. The first 3 have cards, and 99 more follow in a table.

The Administration of Justice for Transfer degree provides a foundation and breadth of coursework in the discipline and prepares students to transfer to any CSU that accepts the Transfer Model Curriculum. The Corrections/Probation A.A. focuses on correctional operations and probation and parole case investigations, with courses ranging from criminal law, evidence, investigation and reporting to criminology, social change and corrections investigations, while the Law Enforcement A.A. emphasizes the administration of justice, from criminal law, evidence, investigation and reporting to community relations and criminology. De Anza's A.A. and A.S. degrees require at least 90 quarter units, covering the major, general education and in many cases electives. The crime lab has bullet trajectory kits, forensic stereo microscopes and a fuming chamber for fingerprint detection, and its instructors are current or former criminalists with local law enforcement agencies.
Admission to De Anza is open to anyone, subject to residency rules, who has a high school diploma, a GED or proficiency certificate, or is at least 18 and able to benefit from instruction. Students who complete the transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, though not to a particular campus or major, and at a CSU that accepts the degree they need no more than 60 semester units after transfer to earn a bachelor's; De Anza notes the degree may not be the best option for students aiming at a particular CSU campus or a school outside the CSU system. De Anza College is in Cupertino, California.

What California Requires to Become a Police Officer
California requires a high school diploma, a GED or another approved equivalency test, or a two-year, four-year or advanced degree. That minimum comes from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
“A high school graduate, pass the General Education Development test or other high school equivalency test approved by CDE, or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved institution”
Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), Government Code sections 1029, 1031 and 1031.4, read October 7, 2026: post.ca.gov
The state minimum doesn’t call for a degree. Individual departments choose their own standards, and BLS reports that the education police departments require ranges from a high school diploma to a college degree. A degree is not a peace officer license: certification comes from completing a police academy and meeting the standards that apply to the agency.
Criminal Justice Jobs and Pay in California
BLS counts 65,940 patrol officers (SOC 33-3051) in California: the lowest-paid tenth earn $76,300 or less, and the highest-paid tenth earn $153,190 or more.
Detectives and criminal investigators (SOC 33-3021) are the best paid of the four jobs in California ($124,840); correctional officers and jailers (SOC 33-3012) are the lowest ($96,370). California pays above the national median for all of them; the widest gap is for patrol officers (SOC 33-3051), $42,670 above the national median of $76,210.

Questions About Criminal Justice Degrees in California
What Are the Best Criminal Justice Schools in California?
The bachelor’s list of 27 ranked bachelor’s programs in California is led by California State University-East Bay, then California State University-Sacramento and San Francisco State University. For an associate degree, De Anza College leads 102 ranked associate’s programs in California. For a master’s degree, University of San Diego leads 9 ranked master’s programs in California. Each list is the national ranking at its level kept to the state’s programs, scored on cost, graduate earnings, completion, online experience, track record and program reputation, with the cost at the in-state rate.
How Much Does a Criminal Justice Degree Cost in California?
Costs depend on the level. In 2023-24 tuition and required fees for a full-time resident came to a median $1,288 at the associate’s programs ($1,104 to $14,804), $8,190 at the bachelor’s programs ($6,818 to $50,670) and $13,515 at the master’s programs ($8,442 to $68,128). The national median for a ranked bachelor’s program is $14,184.
What Does California Require of New Police Officers?
A degree is not part of the minimum the rule sets. California requires a high school diploma, a GED or another approved equivalency test, or a two-year, four-year or advanced degree. A degree is not a peace officer license, and departments can ask for more than the minimum. 44 of 47 state and district rules set a diploma or GED minimum, and the full state-by-state comparison shows which ask for more.
What Do Police Officers Earn in California?
Police patrol work (SOC 33-3051) pays a median $118,880 a year in California, $42,670 above the national median of $76,210, by BLS’s May 2025 count. Elsewhere in the field, detectives and criminal investigators (SOC 33-3021) earn $124,840 and correctional officers and jailers (SOC 33-3012) $96,370.
Can You Earn a Criminal Justice Degree Online From a School in California?
Yes. 10 programs at 10 schools in California rank on the national online lists, and the online table above shows the highest-placed programs at each level with the price an online student from another state pays.
Other Criminal Justice Schools in California
87 more criminal justice schools in California conferred criminal justice degrees in 2023-24. Each is listed with what it confers and its federal tuition and graduation rate, starting with the school that conferred the most degrees. 81 of them confer associate’s degrees, the most common level in this list. A program needs at least five graduates at its level in 2023-24 to be ranked, so a small program appears with its figures and no score. A blank graduation rate means IPEDS lists none for that school. Graduation rates appear for the schools with undergraduate criminal justice degrees, because the federal rate describes undergraduates.

Programs are counted under the criminal justice codes in the federal CIP 43.01 series.
Graduate earnings: U.S. Department of Education, College Scorecard,
field-of-study data for Criminal Justice and Corrections (CIP 43.01). Earnings are College Scorecard's median for the school's criminal justice and corrections graduates (federal field 43.01) at the level who received federal aid, four years after finishing, or one year after where that is the only figure Scorecard publishes. Scorecard reports a median only where enough graduates can be counted, and it covers every program the school reports in that field.
Program names, credit counts, formats, entry requirements and published prices: each school's own program pages, read between October 7, 2026 and October 14, 2026.
