The Bachelor of Science with a major in criminal justice builds a foundation in police, courts and corrections before students choose major electives that let them specialize, with courses that may include in-depth investigations in policing, courts, corrections or forensics. What Georgia Requires to Become a Police Officer
The Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) sets the education minimum for police officers in Georgia. Georgia requires a high school diploma, its recognized equivalent or an approved college degree.
“Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent or an approved college degree indicating successful completion of high school.”
Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST), Georgia POST guidance on becoming a certified peace officer (June 2023), read October 7, 2026: gapost.org
A high school diploma or its equivalent meets the state minimum, so a degree isn’t required. Hiring departments can set a higher bar, and BLS notes the education police departments require ranges from a high school diploma to a college degree. A degree is not a peace officer license: certification comes from completing a police academy and meeting the standards that apply to the agency.
Criminal Justice Jobs and Pay in Georgia
BLS counts 22,170 patrol officers (SOC 33-3051) in Georgia: the lowest-paid tenth earn $43,690 or less, and the highest-paid tenth earn $76,250 or more.
Within Georgia, the median runs from $47,520 for correctional officers and jailers (SOC 33-3012) up to $65,430 for detectives and criminal investigators (SOC 33-3021). Georgia pays below the national median for all of them; the widest gap is for detectives and criminal investigators (SOC 33-3021), $28,360 below the national median of $93,790.
