An associate degree in criminal justice takes about two years of full-time study and 60 credits, and Columbia Southern University ranks first among
the 118 ranked online associate’s programs, which are scored on cost, graduate earnings and four other factors.
A high school diploma is still the typical entry requirement for patrol and corrections jobs, so the degree changes your path most in
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alabama, Maine, Michigan and Texas, where state hiring rules reward or require college.
The Best Online Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Programs
Each program is scored on cost (22%), graduate earnings (22%), completion (17%), online experience (17%), track record (11%) and program reputation (11%) against the other online associate’s programs. On the online lists the price scored is what an online student from another state pays for one credit: the rate the program's own page publishes for online students, else its out-of-state or all-students rate, else the out-of-state per-credit charge the school reported to IPEDS. The ten leading programs charge $141 to $410 a credit, and five of them are public. How the scores work.

The associate degree (AAS) in criminal justice is 63 credits: 42 credits of technical studies, 18 credits of general studies and 3 credits of electives. The program covers law enforcement, corrections, criminal procedures, juvenile law and constitutional law, along with communication, crime prevention, report writing and forensic science applications. Technical courses include Introduction to Corrections, Criminal Justice System, Criminal Procedures, Juvenile Procedures, Constitutional Principles, Writing Reports and a Criminal Justice Issues Capstone. FVTC lists the program in Appleton, Wisconsin or online, part time or full time.
Admission calls for an academic skills assessment, which can be waived with a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher, a completed associate degree or higher, a qualifying GED score, or ACT or Accuplacer results. The degree does not by itself place a student in the Law Enforcement Recruit Academy: FVTC says its academy is a competitive process, that students must pass the fitness and background requirements set by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and that associate degree graduates have Physical Readiness Testing fees waived. FVTC also says out-of-state tuition does not apply to its online classes.

Pierce College's course map for the Associate in Applied Science Criminal Justice totals 90-92 credits and pairs general education with criminal justice courses including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Corrections in America, Introduction to Policing, Crime and Justice in America: The Issues and Criminal Law, a work-based learning or criminal justice elective, and a culminating project. Pierce says the program can be taken online, in person, during the day at the Fort Steilacoom campus in Lakewood, Washington, at night at the Puyallup, Washington campus, or in a combination, and its criminal justice programs can also be taken through Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Pierce admits students who are 18 or older, whose high school class has graduated, who are high school graduates or have earned a GED, or who qualify through Running Start, and Running Start students can talk with a criminal justice advisor about their options. Pierce says most associate degrees take a full-time student about two years, students with prior credits should work with an advisor to get as much credit as possible for completed work, and the course map requires a 2.0 minimum grade in each course. Pierce cautions that any past criminal history may be detrimental to finding employment in the criminal justice field, and it also offers certificates in Crime Analysis and Investigations, Criminal Justice, Explorer Cadet Pre-Law Enforcement and Forensic Technology.

Its coursework covers criminal justice and corrections; criminal procedures, probation and crime prevention strategies; community corrections; criminal and civil law and investigations; and social behavior, social problems, communication, sociology and psychology. Ridgewater's catalog says the Peace Officer AAS includes the classroom education and hands-on Law Enforcement practicum training required to become a peace officer.
Ridgewater's basic admission requirement is a high school diploma or GED, and grade point average, class rank and ACT or SAT scores are not considered; applicants do not need to be Minnesota residents. The Criminal Justice Transfer Pathway AS is designed for students who will move on to a partner Minnesota State university to earn a related bachelor's degree, though graduates can also go directly into the workforce. Veterans, current military members, National Guard and Reserve members and their families can use federal VA education benefits, the Minnesota GI Bill or military tuition assistance, with a School Certifying Official handling enrollment certification, and a student who withdraws for military service is readmitted without penalty if the request comes within three years of release.

Rasmussen's catalog lists the Law Enforcement Associate of Applied Science at 90 quarter credits, 32 in general education and 58 in the core, and Rasmussen says it can be finished in as few as 18 months, or in as few as six months for students who already hold an associate degree and need only the skills requirements. It is a hybrid program of online and residential courses, with the skills portion taught at the HERO Training Center. Core courses include Introduction to Criminal Justice, Policing in America, Traffic Enforcement, Firearms I and II, Use of Force I and II, Crime Scene Response, Minnesota Traffic Code, Minnesota Criminal Code, Patrol Practicals: Handling Calls in Progress and Capstone for Law Enforcement. Rasmussen also offers a fully online Criminal Justice Associate of Applied Science of 91 quarter credits, 42 in general education and 49 in the core, which it says can be completed in as few as 18 months.
Every Rasmussen entrant needs at least a high school diploma or the equivalent. Admission to the law enforcement program also requires a placement exam score that avoids developmental coursework (or a C- or higher in college-level English or math), an information session, driving and criminal history records, a written autobiography, a health physical, a psychological evaluation and background checks, including one by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The program is open only to Minnesota residents or applicants who attest that they intend to seek work as Minnesota peace officers. Rasmussen says it meets standards set by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, though graduates may need additional coursework, training and skills and fitness standards before they are eligible for the licensing exam; the online Criminal Justice degree does not meet those standards.

Campus Associate Degrees, State by State
Most associate degrees are earned at a community college close to home, so the campus programs are listed state by state. A state page is the national ranking at each level, kept to the state's programs, in the national order and with the national scores, numbered from 1 within the state. The price scored is the one a resident pays. California has 102 ranked associate’s programs, the most of any state.
Each state below has a page of its own, with the number of programs it ranks beside its name.
Where College Credit Counts in Police Hiring
For most departments the degree is optional. BLS lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education for patrol officers
BLS, and says many applicants for entry-level police jobs have completed some college coursework
BLS. Six states write college into their rules in different ways.
Minnesota requires a postsecondary degree from a regionally accredited college or university, plus a board-approved peace officer education program.Minn. R. 6700.0601
Wisconsin requires an associate degree or at least 60 college credits, and an officer hired without them must have them by the end of the fifth year of employment.Wis. Admin. Code LES 2.01(1)(e)
Alabama certifies officers who hold a high school diploma or GED and pass the Basic Ability Test, or who hold an associate degree or higher.Ala. Admin. Code r. 650-X-2-.03
Maine requires a high school diploma or a passing score on an approved high school equivalency test. An associate degree or 60 college credits lowers the academy entry age from 21 to 20.Code of Maine Rules 16-227, Chapter 3
Michigan requires a high school diploma or a passing GED score for recruits hired by an agency, and an associate degree for pre-service recruits.Mich. Admin. Code R 28.14203
Texas requires a high school diploma or a GED, and an associate degree or 60 college semester hours lowers the licensing age from 21 to 18.37 TAC 217.1
A degree is not a peace officer license. Each of these states still requires its academy and certification, and a degree only changes the
entry rule shown.
Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Jobs and Pay
BLS assigns each of these jobs a typical entry-level education, and it lists a bachelor’s degree for only probation officers and correctional treatment specialists.
For the others the associate degree is a way to start with more credentials, to meet one of the six state rules above or to build credits toward the
four-year degree, not a requirement.
Typical entry education and median pay for criminal justice jobs, BLS
Typical entry education is BLS’s assignment for each job BLS, and pay is the median from its May 2025 wage survey
BLS. BLS also notes that some police departments pay more to officers with
college degrees BLS. Probation officers and correctional treatment specialists (SOC 21-1092) earn a median of $66,270 and need a bachelor’s
degree, which the bachelor’s degree page ranks, led by California State University-East Bay.
The online bachelor’s page ranks the programs you can finish remotely, led by Columbia Southern University.
What the Two-Year Degree Covers
Colleges set the credit requirement themselves, and about 60 credits is the usual figure: Arizona State University’s catalog says a minimum of 60 credit hours is
required to graduate with an associate degree ASU, and Illinois Valley Community College sets 60 semester hours
IVCC. At 15 credits a semester that is four semesters of full-time study, and part-time study takes longer.
The three leading programs that state a requirement in semester credits ask for 60 to 62.
The cost looks different by route. The median ranked online program charges $7,970 a year out of state, and the median ranked campus program
charges $4,853 a year in state. Your own price depends on which of those you are, so start with the campus list for your state
and use the online ranking when you live far from a college or need to study around a work schedule.
Common Questions About Two-Year Criminal Justice Degrees
Is Criminal Justice 2 or 4 Years?
It can be either. An associate degree in criminal justice takes about two years of full-time study and 60 credits, and a bachelor’s degree takes about four years and at least 120 credits. In 2023-24, 938 schools reported associate degrees in criminal justice and 859 reported bachelor’s degrees, so the two-year route is the more widely offered of the two. Which one you need depends on the job: BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry education for patrol and corrections work and a bachelor’s degree for probation officers. The bachelor’s degree page covers the four-year route.
Can You Get a 2 Year Degree in Criminal Justice?
Yes. Colleges awarded 22,609 associate degrees in criminal justice in 2023-24, and two-year colleges awarded 64% of them. 683 ranked associate’s programs meet the entry bar for this site, 118 of them online, and each state page lists its campus programs from that national ranking.
Can You Get an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Online?
Yes. The 118 ranked online associate’s programs above can be finished online, which the school’s own page says, and Columbia Southern University ranks first. The same programs are scored on cost, graduate earnings, completion, online experience, track record and program reputation, so you can compare an online program with the others on the same terms.
How Much Does an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Cost?
The median ranked online program charges $7,970 a year in tuition and required fees for a student from out of state, and the median ranked campus program charges $4,853 a year for a resident of its state. Those are different prices for different students: a community college charges its own residents far less than it charges everyone else, which is why the campus rankings score the price a resident pays and the online ranking the price an online student from another state pays. The online ranking scores the price of one credit rather than the annual total, with a median of $277 a credit across the ranked online programs; the campus rankings score the resident’s year.
Do You Need an Associate Degree to Become a Police Officer?
Usually not. BLS lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education for patrol officers (SOC 33-3051), who earned a median $76,210 in May 2025. Six states write college into their rules, and Where College Credit Counts in Police Hiring sets them out. The state-by-state guide gives every board’s rule.
