What Maine Requires to Become a Police Officer
The Maine Criminal Justice Academy Board of Trustees sets the education minimum for police officers in Maine. Maine requires a high school diploma or a passing score on an approved high school equivalency test. Pre-service applicants enrolled in a degree program with 40 credits may enter at 19.
“Shall be a high school graduate, or have scored as follows on one of the two Board of Trustees approved high school equivalency tests:”
Maine Criminal Justice Academy Board of Trustees, Code of Maine Rules 16-227, Chapter 3, read October 7, 2026: maine.gov
College counts for something in this rule. An associate degree or 60 college credits lowers the academy entry age from 21 to 20. maine.gov, read October 7, 2026.
You don’t need a degree to meet that minimum. Departments can ask for more than the state does, and BLS says the education police departments require ranges from a high school diploma to a college degree. A degree is not a peace officer license: certification comes from completing a police academy and meeting the standards that apply to the agency.
